Short Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata: Early morning departure from Cusco. Visit to the pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca and the colonial town of Paucartambo with its museum. Lunch in the cloud forest and descent observing the Andean Cock-of-the-rock and the Spectacled Bear. Arrival at the lodge in Pilcopata and free time to visit the town.
Day 2: Pilcopata – Manu Lodge: Morning walk through the forest, visit to a coca plantation and a wildlife rescue center. Transfer to Puerto Atalaya (500 m a.s.l.) to start the boat descent down the Alto Madre de Dios River. Arrival at Manu Lodge, lunch, and swimming in the river. Afternoon exploration in the swamp and nocturnal wildlife observation before dinner.
Day 3: Lodge – Machuwasi Lake – Lodge: Very early visit to the macaw and parrot clay lick by boat. Return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by a 2-hour walk in the forest. Lunch and free time with the option to practice ziplining. In the afternoon, exploration by raft on Lake Machuwasi and a night walk to look for insects and amphibians.
Day 4: Lodge – Puerto Atalaya – Cusco: 20-minute morning navigation along a stream to witness parrots licking clay in their habitat. Breakfast at the lodge, packing, and boat transfer to Puerto Atalaya, where our private bus will be waiting for the direct return trip to Cusco.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pilcopata

The expedition will begin very early in the morning with pick-up in the city center or at a meeting point that the Vilcabamba Tours team will indicate in a timely manner. We will board one of our equipped vehicles to begin a journey that crosses interesting valleys located between the Andes Mountains and picturesque rural communities of the region. Our first archaeological stop will be at the pre-Inca tombs of the Lupaca culture, known locally as the Chullpas of Ninamarca.

Afterward, we will stop in Paucartambo, a beautiful and traditional town of colonial architecture, where we will take a guided tour of its interesting historical museum. Continuing the journey, we will enter the cloud forest, the designated place to enjoy a fresh lunch en route. This area is geographically famous for its wealth of endemic species, serving as a habitat for the Spectacled Bear and the Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird, known for its unique courtship ritual). During the descent, you will also be able to contemplate an immense variety of orchids, bromeliads, and giant ferns. We will continue observing this spectacular natural scenery along the road until we arrive at our selected lodge in the town of Pilcopata.

After settling into your rooms, you will have free time to walk and visit the town, closing the day with dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Pilcopata – Manu Lodge

After having breakfast at the lodge, we will take a morning walk through the nearby trails, a favorable opportunity to start observing the forest fauna up close, such as tropical birds and monkeys in the wild. In this section of the itinerary, we will visit a local coca plantation and a specialized wildlife rescue center. Once these visits are concluded, the transport will take us to Puerto Atalaya, a pier located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level.

There, we will equip ourselves and begin the descent in a motorized boat provided by the agency, sailing down the river while observing the enormous diversity of riverside birds, including herons, vultures, and cormorants. We will arrive at the Manu Lodge facilities, where passengers will have the opportunity to bathe in the refreshing waters of the river before enjoying lunch. In the afternoon, we will take a guided hike to a nearby swamp, a strategic point for spotting toucans, woodpeckers, and macaws. At nightfall, and before serving dinner, we will go out with our bilingual guide to carry out an observation activity of the Manu wildlife that stands out and becomes active during the night hours. Finally, we will return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the night.

Day 3: Lodge – Machuwasi Lake – Lodge

Very early in the morning, we will board the motorized boat towards the macaw clay lick, an imposing clay wall located along the riverbank where various species of parrots and parakeets congregate daily (such as the blue-headed parrot, the white-eyed parakeet, and the chestnut-fronted macaw, among others). At this site, the birds consume the mineralized clay, an indispensable natural process that helps them digest food and eliminate toxins from their organisms. After witnessing this spectacle of color and sound, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious breakfast. After eating, we will undertake a 2-hour botanical exploration hike through the deep forest.

Upon conclusion, we will return to the lodge for lunch, having the rest of the afternoon free to rest in the facilities or swim in the river; likewise, for passengers seeking adrenaline, there is the option of practicing ziplining in the area. At the end of the afternoon, we will head to Lake Machuwasi. In this beautiful Amazonian mirror of water, we will use traditional rafts to explore the surroundings and spot rare species such as the prehistoric hoatzin (shansho), as well as monkeys and capybaras.

The day will culminate with a night walk through the forest specifically oriented towards the search and recognition of exotic insects and amphibians. At the end of the tour, dinner will be served in the main dining room and you will spend the night at Manu Lodge.

Day 4: Lodge – Puerto Atalaya – Cusco

The last day of the expedition begins early in the morning by boarding the boat for an exciting 20-minute river journey down a picturesque secondary stream. During this final stretch, we will witness a second parrot activity as they come to lick the clay on the walls of the trail. We will be able to admire green parrots, the blue-headed parrot, the mealy parrot, and the chestnut-fronted macaw in their natural habitat, offering us one last acoustic and visual experience in the jungle. We will return to the lodge structures for a comforting breakfast. Subsequently, you will have the necessary time to pack your belongings and souvenirs from this magical jungle. Once the preparations are finished, we will say goodbye to the lodge staff and board the motorized boat back to Puerto Atalaya. At the pier, our private Vilcabamba Tours bus will be waiting, which will begin the direct return trip to the city of Cusco, ending the tourist services upon disembarking at your respective hotels in the afternoon.
